Period digestion – The link between your period and your stomach

1 Mins read

Besides cramps and other aches and pains, we go through much more during our period. You’re not alone if your stomach feels upside down during your period or if you face digestive issues before your period. From diarrhea to constipation, acidity to bloating, we tend to experience a plethora of discomfort period digestion issues.

Why does it happen? More importantly, what can you do to avoid it?

Hormonal changes cause digestive distress:

During your monthly cycle, two key hormones tend to fluctuate and control your menstruation – Estrogen and Progesterone. Increased levels of progesterone usually slow down motility in the digestive tract, leading to constipation. On the other hand, estrogen increases motility and causes diarrhea. Depending on the balance of hormones during your cycle, you could face either of the two period digestive issues, accompanied with other symptoms.

Don’t know what you can do to make period digestion better? We asked our #NuaWomen who have shared some amazing and easy tips – tried and tested!

For me, it just increases the acidity. I add a spoonful of chia seeds in cold milk and have it. – @Desai_anaika_

Sipping hot water with a dash of apple cider vinegar. @salonijain891984

I avoid food like beans and tamarind as they will contribute to more bloating @chennaigirl5
