Period symptoms are those subtle (actually not-so-subtle!) signs that your body is getting ready for your periods.
Our bodies tend to give us some subtle (yet not-so-subtle!) signs right when it is getting ready for periods. These symptoms, commonly known as PMS or Premenstrual syndrome, occur due to the cyclic hormonal changes which our bodies experience 1-2 weeks* before we menstruate.
Over the years, as we grow and life begins to take a whole new meaning, our period symptoms (or PMS), too appear newer than before.
Sometimes the feeling of fatigue is too frequent, sometimes we don’t feel tired at all. Some of us experience an increase in bloating, while others may experience gut issues.
Whatever it is, period symptoms affect most of us in some way or the other.
While the range can vary, these are the 4 common symptoms women often face:
1. Fatigue
As serotonin levels go down, our body begins to lose out on energy. Along with fatigue, you might experience headaches, irritability, and the lack of desire and motivation to do anything. It’s okay! In those times, try not to push yourself too much. Take a short break.
2. Bloating
With oestrogen levels going up, our bodies begin to retain water. On the other hand, as progesterone levels increase, our bodies’ tendency to digest food also goes down. This is when our bodies begin to bloat. Some women might experience bloating for five days straight but bloating typically reduces soon after our period begins. Try indulging in some protein-rich diet; get some sleep, too, as it helps with regulating the fluid in your body.
3. Breast Tenderness
Cyclic breast tenderness is commonly experienced by most women. The changing levels of oestrogen and progesterone can affect the growth of milk glands and ducts. Some women might also experience pain in the underarm region closer to the breast. Try to go easy on what kind of bra and clothes you wear. Put on something loose and comfortable to give your body enough spare to breathe.
4. Low Moods
Mood swings are probably the most talked about and the most relatable period symptom. Right from feeling irritated at something as small as a bottle cap – because anything that is small, round, and cute deserves all the doting in the world – to being overjoyed at the sight of a beautiful bedsheet, mood swings can happen anywhere, at any time. Try to take things slower, easier. If you don’t feel up to doing anything, pace yourself.
