Myth: Menstrual cycles are in sync with moon cycles

Menstruation is said to be coined from the Greek word meaning month (mensis) and moon (mene). It is commonly believed that menstrual cycles and moon phases have a correlation and they sync up because of similarities in duration (approximately one month). Correlation or coincidence?
